Welcome to Amarillo, Texas!
Amarillo
calls itself the place where visitors can "step into the real Texas"
because its historical roots and modern industry embody the state's quintessence.
According to city information, Amarillo had a population of between 500 to 600
humans and 50,000 head of cattle in 1893. The discovery of gas and oil in the
early 20th century contributed to Amarillo's development as an industrial
city. Today, Amarillo is the cultural and commercial center of the Texas Panhandle.
It is an area where the greeting "Howdy" is frequently heard and working
ranches supply 25 percent of America's beef. The city is also a place where
custom guns, saddles, boots, and hats are still lovingly crafted. Its authenticity
is straight-forward, with no gimmicks or frills. Visitors to the city will enjoy
its unique attractions like Cadillac Ranch, Big Texan Steak Ranch, and the Route
66 Historic District. Old West buffs enjoy the working ranches that operate much
like they did in the 19th century. A stay in Amarillo's hotels and resorts gives visitors
the "real deal" in more ways than one.
Visiting Amarillo
Amarillo is truly a breath of fresh air. It is one of country's top-ranked cities
when it comes to clean air quality. The city also experiences relatively low humidity.
Both facts are largely due to Amarillo's 3,671-foot altitude and constant
breeze. The city experiences four distinct seasons, but enjoys a moderate temperature
year-round.
